HPCI News: Patient Safety Letter to Secretary Sebelius

The attached letter to Secretary Sebelius was signed onto by 37 organizations including HPCI and IHBA. It is a very strong message supporting improving quality and affordability of health care through the use of performance measurement and public reporting that supports consumer decision-making and supports appropriate payment strategies.
In response to concerns expressed by some hospitals about the use of the patient safety measures, the letter make a key point that we can not wait until the arrival of perfect measures. "When it comes to patient safety, we simply cannot afford – in either human or financial terms – to delay or derail progress toward greater transparency and accountability."
